How to set up your Quest 3 for first use
July 20, 2026
You just opened the box. Here is what to do before you put it on your face.
1. Charge it fully first
Quest 3 ships partially charged. Plug it in and wait for a full charge before your first session — around 2 to 2.5 hours. This sets the battery calibration correctly.
2. Adjust the head strap before you need to
The default Quest 3 top strap is adjustable. Spend two minutes getting the fit right before your first session rather than fussing with it mid-game. If you bought an elite-style strap, install it before charging so everything is ready at once.
3. Set the IPD
The Quest 3 has a physical IPD slider on the bottom of the headset. Adjust it until the image looks sharp — for most adults this is 63-68mm. Blurry edges usually mean the IPD is off, not that you need to clean the lenses.
4. Install the face cover swap early
If you have a silicone face cover, swap it before the foam soaks up any sweat from your first session. Takes 30 seconds and saves you from a smell problem later.
5. Update the software before gaming
Quest 3 will want to download a system update. Let it run before you start a long session — updates can interrupt games at inconvenient moments.
